Description

Making the river, riverbanks and waterways safer and enhancing the environment is a main objective of the regeneration and development of the River Clyde corridor.

The water safety and environmental improvement action plan has been developed by the Water Safety Working Group, which comprises a variety of national and local organisations. The plan aims to continually improve the safety, security and physical environment along the River Clyde, its tributaries, river banks, walkways and surrounds.

The specialised clean-up boat, the St Mungo cleans flotsam and jetsam from the Clyde, and two smaller boats have been purchased to assist in the clearing of tributaries and locations above the tidal weir.

A dedicated clean-up squad has been established and litter bins have been placed at strategic locations along the river.

Cost

The total budget for 2004 – 2005/6 is £480,000 (this includes carry forward Scottish Executive funding and City Council finance)

Current status

As well as the purchase of the clean-up boat and regular clearance operations, new seating has been installed at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. CCTV cameras are being placed along the walkway in the city centre. Improved lighting has been installed under a bridge. The Group is also working closely with Strathclyde Police to enhance safety on walkways. Plans are being developed for the refurbishment of Rowing Boat Houses. There are also plans for a water safety educational programme.

Timescale

The project began in 2004 and is ongoing.
