Caledonia Road church

Save Greek Thomson church

An appeal has been launched to save The Caledonia Road Church in the Gorbals. The church is one of the last remaining buildings by Scottish architect Alexander “Greek” Thomson and the appeal has been launched by the Alexander Greek Thomson Society.

The plans are to consolidate remains of grade A listed Caledonia Church , create exhibition on Thomson, cafe, studio and apartments in the inner courtyard.

The church – burnt out in 1965 and partially demolished – was Thomson’s first public building, built in 1856-7, and he himself worshipped there while living in nearby Apsley Place.

Devised by the Alexander Thomson Society, the appeal has received £280,000 from Glasgow City Council.

If the rest of the money is secured, the redevelopment of the building into a museum and gallery could be complete in 18 months.

The proposal for the redevelopment involves the conservation of the ‘A’ listed remains of the former church and the development of several galleries and a museum dedicated to the life and work of Alexander Thomson, with a café, studio spaces and ten serviced two person apartments for short term letting.
