Titan Crane at Clydebank

New Titan Crane resources

A new Education Outreach Programme has been designed to make the most of the Titan Crane and John Brown's Shipyard  curriculum resources available on our website by combining the lesson plan with the opportunity for a school trip to the Crane itself.

The Titan Crane is a symbol of a proud industrial heritage that is known worldwide. It has dominated the Clydebank horizon for over 100 years.

Built in 1907 for £24,600 the crane was recently converted to a visitor attraction for £3.7million and opened in 2007.

In order to really bring the history of this alive, the education and outreach programme relies on the active participation of people who used to work here, live here and also those who want to know about what it used to be like.

Resources

Created with the Curriculum for Excellence in mind, the free Titan Education Resource Pack is relevant to today's educational needs and ideally suited for use in any classroom.

Visits

Schools can organise a visit to the crane from May to October which can be tailor made to fit into your curricular topics. The trips last about 1 hour and could be joined up with a ‘Classroom on the Clyde’ river boat trip. Learn about the role it played in ship building on the Clyde. The lift takes you 150 ft above ground and gives you a spectacular view of the area and a wealth of historical and up to date information.

Workshops

As well as giving guided tours of the Titan, the Heritage Officer is available to lead workshops for your class or group. Some workshop themes include:
• Shipbuilding in John Brown's Yard
• Clydebank Past, Present & Future
• Urban Regeneration

Workshops can take place prior to or after a visit to the Titan and aim to enhance the learning experience of all visitors.
