Language and visual imagery in advertising

Using the ‘River of learning’ slogan as a starting point, this lesson idea will develop knowledge and understanding about what makes an effective slogan and advertising campaign, applying this knowledge in a real life context. The lessons will draw on current advertising campaigns and analyse the various literary techniques used to create slogans/effective advertisements. Young people will form advertising companies and apply the language and visual techniques discussed to design a leaflet to promote local health and sports facilities for young people. Possibility of working alongside local graphic design/printing company to turn the winning design into a leaflet.

Broad Outcomes of learning

• Subject knowledge enhanced and gained: diet, health, fitness and local facilities for these. Additionally, knowledge of how language is used by business/organisations to promote a particular product/idea
• Enterprising skills improved by: developing creativity, confidence, responsibility and teamwork
• Developed employability skills: presenting, communication, planning, organisation, time management and analysing
• Confidence of working independently from teacher-led decisions demonstrated by fulfilling certain roles within the company, to be decided by the company themselves
• Learners take responsibility for their learning through making decisions about layout, design of leaflets as well as appropriate information/images/language to include
• Learners have developed 4 capacities of CFE

• Supports 5-14 English-uses of literary techniques to create effects
• Relevance of how curriculum topic of literary/poetic techniques is applied in the world of advertising and how these techniques can be put into practice to produce an informative and eye-catching leaflet
