Designing an allotment

This idea will develop a knowledge and understanding of geometry and finance, applying this knowledge in a real life context and looking at work already started e.g. ‘Dalmuir Plots’. Young people will work in teams (as landscaping companies) with the task of designing an allotment in or nearby their school and present design to school staff and peers.

Broad Outcomes of learning

• Subject knowledge of geometry and finance gained and enhanced
• Employability skills enhanced – application of knowledge in a real situation by working within a design team, planning to a fixed budget, planning allotment
• Develop employability skills such as communication, planning, organisation, time management, researching, presenting, analysing, sourcing, co-operating, contributing, and reporting
• Confidence of working independently from teacher-led lessons demonstrated by producing finished plan on time and within budget
• Pupils take responsibility for their learning through making decisions about design of gardens, material, costing, types of crop and crop rotation
• Learners have developed enterprising skills identified as 4 capacities of CfE
