Design an eco-friendly car

Design an eco–friendly car

This idea will develop a knowledge and understanding of finance relative to speed, distance and time in addition to percentages and apply this knowledge in a real life context. Young people will work in teams to meet a spec to design a hybrid/modern environmental/friendly car that possibly reduces harmful gas emissions for a car manufacturer. It will meet certain criteria within a set budget, including which materials to use and design parameters for the car.

Outcomes of learning

• Subject knowledge gained and enhanced e.g. an appreciation of managing finances and calculating the optimum speed at which it excels in performance
• Enterprising skills improved by developing creativity, confidence, taking responsibility and team work
• Developed employability skills: communication, planning, organisation, researching, analysing, presenting and marketing.
• Confidence of working independently from teacher-led lessons demonstrated by working in groups and discussing the challenge in order to work out any potential obstacles
• Pupils take responsibility for their learning through making decisions on budgeting, finance, which materials to use and design parameters for the car
• Pupils have developed 4 capacities of CfE

Relevance to curriculum

• Covers many areas in Standard Grade Maths i.e. Speed, distance, time and money
