The SV Glenlee sets sail for its new home

All aboard for Tall Ships race

With just over two weeks until The Tall Ships Races sail into Greenock, anticipation is building for what will truly be a fantastic event with visitors expected from all over the world.

The four day event takes place around Greenock from 9 - 12 July 2011.

As well as the spectacular fleet of ships, event organisers have arranged a jam packed four days of entertainment and activities to ensure that there is plenty to see and do across the four day period for all the family. All events, including live performances will be free to the public.

Organisers, Sail Inverclyde, have confirmed that 57 Tall Ships will be docked throughout the four day event along the multi-million pound refurbished James Watt Docks and quaysides, from the 9th – 12th July, culminating in the breathtaking Parade of Sail leaving Greenock on the Tuesday 12 July at 1pm.

As well as over 1,885 experienced crew members and captains visiting Greenock, hundreds of trainees will be taking part in the race.

With over 700,000 visits expected across the four days the area will be bustling with lots to see and do. From street theatre to aerial acrobatics there is something for all the family.

There will also be star performances from Scottish favourites Lulu and Deacon Blue, as well as The Magic Numbers and Big Vern and The Shootahs on the main stage at Inchgreen.

The main stage will also be busy across the four days showcasing local talent from throughout Scotland, finishing with an explosive firework show on Monday night by award winning 21cc Fireworks.

A stunning fly past by the world famous Red Arrows ahead of the lunchtime parade of sail on the Tuesday will be a massive crowd pleaser and those keen to get the best seat in the house are encouraged to view from Greenock Esplanade.

Visitors are being advised that there is very little car parking in Greenock itself and that visitors to the area should use public transport or the massive park and ride car parks at Nether Southbar near Bishopton or at IBM on A78 between Greenock and Inverkip.

The official event programme will provide a comprehensive timetable of events. More information on all activities planned across the four day period can be found at www.tallshipsracesgreenock.com.
